JPEG compression adds soft edges and color noise. The converter smooths those artifacts while grouping the picture into flat color regions, then traces each region into closed SVG paths. The output is real vector geometry, not an embedded bitmap.

Troubleshooting
Why does my photo look posterised?
Tracing works by grouping pixels into a small number of flat color regions. Photographs and gradients have thousands of colors, so the result is a poster-style approximation. Flat logos, icons and illustrations trace best.
Small text or thin lines disappear
Very thin strokes (a few pixels wide) can merge with their surroundings. Upload the largest, sharpest original you have and raise the number of colors so the outline gets its own region.
The background became a filled shape
Turn on “Remove background” before converting: it drops the connected outer background region instead of tracing it as a shape.
JPEG artifacts show up as speckles
Keep the color count low (4–8) for logos so compression noise is absorbed into the main regions, and enable smoothing.
