Subject (AI) sends a copy of your image, at most 2,048 px on its longest side, to our GPU provider, where the open-source BiRefNet model draws a mask of the subject; the mask is applied here as soft transparency, and the colors along the edge are re-estimated so no fringe of the old background stays behind. Flat background needs no model: the backdrop color is flooded in from the image edges, so areas enclosed by the artwork are kept, and a checkerboard painted into the image as fake transparency is removed too. Either way you get a transparent PNG at your image's size (images over 2,048 px are scaled down first), and you can vectorize the cut-out into an SVG afterwards. The tracer that makes SVGs does not use AI.

Limits
Up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels per image. Processing stops after 90 s. Images over 2048 px on the long side are scaled down to 2048 px first; the PNG comes back at that size.

Troubleshooting
Which mode should I use?
Flat background when the backdrop is one plain color (a logo on white, a sticker on a colored sheet): it is exact and keeps every enclosed detail. Subject (AI) for everything else — photos, gradients, patterns, busy scenes. After a Flat run the result tells you when most of the border was not one color, and offers Subject (AI).
Is the AI used for anything else?
No. Only Subject (AI) uses a model, and only to decide which pixels belong to the subject. The SVG tracer is a deterministic algorithm, not AI. Your images are never used to train anything.
Where does my image go?
With Subject (AI), a copy of the image (at most 2,048 px) goes to Modal Labs, the GPU provider that runs the model, over an encrypted connection; it is processed in memory and not stored there. The mask comes back here and is kept with your file, which is deleted after 24 hours for a guest or 30 days in an account. Flat background never leaves our servers.
Small holes or thin gaps were filled in
The model works at a fixed resolution, so gaps a few pixels wide (between letters, inside a ring) can come out filled. If the backdrop is one plain color, Flat background keeps them exactly.
Bits of the background were kept
On very busy backdrops with shapes as colorful as the subject, the model can keep a fragment. Crop the image closer to the subject and run it again — each run is a free preview.
The AI option is not available
It has a daily limit per visitor and for the whole site, and pauses briefly after repeated errors. The page says which applies; Flat background always works.
Access and pricing
Previews are free (5 a day as a guest, 100 with an account); Subject (AI) runs are limited to 3 a day as a guest and 25 with an account. Unlocking a result costs 1 credit — the price is stated before you unlock, and failed runs are never charged. Files are kept 24 hours for guests and 30 days in an account. See pricing.
